Three years after the death of Aldo Bertani, our Mentor, we like to take stock of the situation of this Academy.
We believe of catching the spirit of the plastic surgery of the future by focusing on tissue regeneration. In our youth we lived the heroic years of reconstructive microsurgery, which has allowed us to reach unthinkable goals such as the replanting of the limbs, the transplant tissue for saving limbs and finally the transplant tissue to reactivate the basic functions of relationship life, such as the use of the hand, walking, smile. Even today the idea of microsurgery in plastic surgery, or make your own body as a tissue bank to restore the shape and function of the diseased part is a winning idea, but it is equally true that it do not solve all the reconstructive issues of our discipline.
Here, then, that the regenerative plastic surgery, the last among the plastic surgery techniques, is able to fill the missing piece; the idea of being able to stimulate the tissues to regenerate themselves, not only is fascinating idea, but it is the gold standard of reconstructive surgery. We do not replace the missing tissue with other tissues, does not raise repair by scars, but we aim at the highest result: the self-regenerating tissues.
Today, we like to remember Aldo Bertani in the name of regenerative plastic surgery because our Mentor was ahead of his time, in the rif of innovation. He was among the firsts in the seventies to discover the usefulness of skin flaps limbs posting the technique at the same time of his British colleagues. He was able to capture the clinical and social importance of hand surgery and reconstructive microsurgery pushing his students to cultivate these important fields of application, and it was once again among the firsts to realize the great potential of regenerative plastic surgery, organizing meticulously the conference:
“Innovations in Plastic Surgery. New flaps and Regenerative Surgery “, held on 30 and 31 May 2013 in Senigallia, in the splendid setting of the Round sea.
Aldo Bertani unfortunately did not have the joy of sharing with us the fulfillment of his project, since he left us before, February 23, 2013, and consequently the Meeting in Senigallia took on the character of the scientific and professional commemoration of our Mentor. However the text of the greeting message of the convention drawn up by himself is a true scientific and professional testament addressed to his students when he writes: “At last, because of the merits of the latest innovations obtained by plastic surgery in terms of new flaps and in terms of innovative techniques in regenerative surgery, lipofilling in the lead, plastic surgeons are now realizing a dream, always cherished, being able to combine in a single treatment reactivation of functions with a pleasant and harmonious look . ”
